Rust
de Winter is the official camp site of the 4x4ATV Organisation.
Situated
around 100km north of Pretoria, the members have an opportunity to
escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy time, off-road
style, in nature. The 26,97ha camp site is situated on the banks of
the Elands River and it is believed that, on our very camp site, you
will find the biggest "Apiesdoring" trees in the southern
hemisphere. Some of these trees are over 300 years old.
This
site caters an average of 100 permanent stands and about 200 casual
sites available for day visitors. A touch of luxury is provided by 7
ablution facilities and 8 water tanks fed through a bore hole or
pump form the river system depending on the time of year and water
level in the river. (Please note however that this water is not fit
for drinking - you are urged to bring along fresh drinking water
when visiting the camp). Regular functions are hosted under the 4 lapa's on the site.
Accross
the road from the camp site we have access to what is known as the Gymkhana. Here our members have the opportunity to test their own as
well as their vehicle's capabilities in a true off-road environment.
These obstacles have been set up and are maintained by officials
specifically for the purpose of enjoyment without damaging existing
fauna and flora. The farms around Rust de Winter are privately owned
and driving around on these dirt roads are strictly controlled and
guided by the committee. We do however cater for this requirement
through our Rust de Winter Bundu Trail where participants are
taken into a mountainous area where guided access have been approved
by the land owners. (Scroll down to learn more regarding our Budu
Trail.)
The
Rust de Winter camp site provides a cheaper option during holiday
periods. A lot of our events are based at the camp site and normally
additional events are held during holiday periods, ensuring that our
members never get tired or bored when visiting Rust de Winter. Even
the children are quite happy to spend the day at the swimming pool
and sliding tube, providing parents with some deserved time off.
They are free to explore nature within the camp fences. The emphasis
on family participation is real and on big events such as the annual
Toyota Rust de Winter Jamboree, the committee provides special
entertainment for the children.
Rates: Members -
R20.00 per person per day
R50.00 per vehicle per stay
Non-Members - R30.00 per person per day
R50.00 per vehicle per stay
To become
eligible for a stand at Rust de Winter you have to be an active
member of the 4X4ATV Organisation for no less than 2 years. Being
"active" requires you to regularly attend monthly meetings
and social functions. Your continued involvement in our Organisation
activities is required - you have to attend at least 6 monthly
meetings and visit your camp site at least 8 times during the year.
Making yourself available to help in the camp where required, also
helps a lot towards motivating for your stand. Should you meet this
requirement, please contact Piet Pearson (0824455583) - there are
limited stands available right now! Permanent stand fees are R350.00
per year and the normal camp fees per day applies. Membership and Rust de
Winter fees are payable before the end of January each
year.

Vir enige verdere inligting kontak asb. enige komiteelid. Julle is baie welkom!
|
RUST DE WINTER STAANPLEKKE
In geval van nood is dit in die karavaan eienaar se eie belang dat die volgende inligting vertoon moet word;

What is camping without a nice, big camp fire!
You can buy your
braai wood for R12.00 per bag from Albert at the gate.

RUST DE WINTER
BUNDU TRAIL
1.
RATING
This trail
is rated between a *** to a **** route.
(Refer the bottom of this page for an analysis on this rating.)
|

|
2.
TRAIL SUMMARY
A
4X4 trail starting in basic bushveld with sandy tracks. Trail
winds through fairy tale gorges and valleys steadily climbing up
hilly and mountain passes on typical rocky mountain trails to an
overnight stop. Encounter various obstacles on the way up and
cross several mountain streams on the route which will test your
driving skills and train the newcomers to this very pleasant sport
under expert guidance from your guides.
Overnight
stop on the highest outcrop in the area overlooking beautiful
valleys where participants must provide their own camping
equipment. Enjoy the beauty of a bushveld sunset around a provided
log fire. Spend a evening with friends and new acquaintances
whilst cooking your evening meal on supplied braai
facilities. The convoy leaves the next morning after breakfast
following a different route down the valleys, again crossing
streams before arriving back at the starting point around noon
where certificates are issued by the organisers to all drivers.
The total distance of the trail is approximately 80km.
|
3.
LOCALITY
The trail is
situated halfway to Warmbaths to the north of Pretoria, east of the
highway between Rust de Winter dam and Moloto. The trail starts from the
camping area of the 4x4ATV Organisation at Rust de Winter. The easiest way to get
to the camp is to use the highway from Pretoria to Warmbaths. Use the
Hammanskraal / Boekenhout off-ramp turning right across the highway and
travel east. Just after crossing the highway take next tar road left going
north. At following T-junction turn right going east. Pass the Rust de
Winter dam road sign still going east and continue straight through the
next tar cross roads. Pass a small settlement with stores and big
Apiesdoring trees in the background and cross the Elands River bridge.
Turn right just after the river into the camping area of the 4x4ATV Organisation.
The camping area is approximately 100km from Pretoria.
4.
DIFFICULTY OF TRAIL
Drivers
should preferably know their vehicles and have some off-road experience.
The trail is not dangerous if drivers follow the advise of the tour
guides. When obstacles or difficult terrain is covered, officials will
guide drivers as and when required. Drivers will definitely learn more
about what their vehicles are capable of and gain valuable experience on
this trail.
5.
TRAIL DURATION
Two days.
Trail starts from Rust de Winter camp at 10h00 on the Saturday and
participants will be back in camp by 14h00 on the Sunday.
|

|
6.
HIGHLIGHTS OF TRAIL
Participants
will experience typical un-spoilt bushveld scenery and see game
and birds while traveling over sometimes difficult terrain. In the
summer months the valleys are covered in a green expanse of beauty
which will long be remembered. Trail proceeds through the famous
'lovers lane' which is a water formed gorge through alluvial
rock covered in evergreen trees that form a continual leave tunnel
and shade. Trees along the trail are identified with National
Parks signage and numbering. In season streams are filled with
crystal clear water to add to the beauty of the area. The crossing
of this and the pleasure of the trail as a whole, again highlights
to the driver why he purchased a 4X4.
7.
ACCOMMODATION
The
starting and end point is from the 4x4ATV Organisation's official camp site at Rust de Winter
which have proper ablution facilities with hot
water showers. Participants are welcome to extend their stay
before or after the trail at a nominal fee of R10.00 per person per day.
(Non-members pay R20.00 per person per day.) Please note however
that the Friday night before the Bundu leaves camp, is free of
charge. The facilities at the overnight camp on the mountain are very
basic. Long drop toilets are provided and participants must cart
their own water for their ablutions or to use in provided showers.
|
8.
RECOMMENDED PERIODS AND REQUIRED PARTICIPANTS
Trails can
be booked from January to May and August to December. A minimum of 10 to a
maximum of 15 vehicles are required.
9.
BOOKING
Trails can
be booked with Peter Claasen of the 4x4ATV Organisation at R300.00 per
vehicle (non-members pay R400.00 per vehicle) on cell phone no: 082 558 6184.

Groete, Deon Kok.
